With Driver Detective I downloaded an update for my scanner, which took me over 15 hours on dial-up. Now trying to install the software, I am told that it has not passed Windows Logo testing on its compatibility with Windows XP; that it might impair my system immediately or in the future. Microsoft strongly recommends that I should stop this installation now. What should I do?

You can ignore the warning and move on with the installation. Although the driver is compatible with your system, it did not pass Windows verification but I can assure you it will work. Alternatively, download the drivers from HP Support instead of using Driver Detective.
